Being the odd one out, that someone who does things their own way and isn’t afraid to showcase their individuality through the way they dress and the things they say and do, is never the easiest path. But it is an honest one. I myself was once a fringed suede jacket-wearing, long-haired goth in a small, conservative town in rural middle England, but that is nothing compared to the scenario that Blind Uncle Harry describes on his latest single, “Kimberly Kankowski.”
I’m not sure if the song is fictional or otherwise, but the scene he sets, one of a green-haired, vegan, dumpster-diving freegan, weed-smoking, gender rights advocate trying to live her life on her own terms in Tennessee, doesn’t sound like a lot of fun either!
But that is what our favourite Uncle does: he shines a musical spotlight on the intolerance and division in society today, in songs laced with a brilliant mix of lyrical humour and which hold a mirror up to life’s more dangerous realities.
And if his wonky folk meets alt-pop leans into the sound and sentiment of earlier times, the sound of the ’60s protest song being wielded deftly and decisively in the modern age, you shouldn’t be asking why Blind Uncle Harry is still leaning into such sonic sentiments, but why we live in a world where he still feels the need to!
Have we learned nothing from the past? (No need to answer that, it’s a rhetorical question.)
