Beach Sloth, December 17 2024

Blind Uncle Harry taps into Bob Dylan’s storytelling but with positivity on “Hey Hey Kendra Ann.” A lovely chamber folk musing unspools throughout the entire journey. Fiddle, acoustic guitar, and vocals sung earnestly give the song this warm, welcoming presence. Given how this is such a low-key demeanor, the whole song has this laid-back quality. Nothing here feels the need to rush things or raise its voice. Instead, the song takes on this conversational tenor, like talking to a dear friend. He’s ever so kind, with the tenderness punctuated by the specific word choice.

The first drum brushes perfectly merge with the vocal stylings. He elongates the words to give time to this dilated sensibility. From that moment, the rest of the song gradually comes into place. The use of these different elements results in communal property. Nods to Michael Hurley’s similarly inspired works are undeniable, letting the piece seemingly waft into the air, lending it a luscious quality. The evolution of the groove results in this ever-denser quality of the work, giving it a powerful wall of sound yet remaining relatively rural. For the track, more and more vocals enter the fray, which represents a moment of pure togetherness. Fiddle work goes for this extended quality, as it echoes. It all bursts in one final blast of color at the very finale.

“Hey Hey Kenda Ann” presents Blind Uncle Harry as someone who can tap into previous generations to create a powerful, poignant, and heartfelt piece of pop.
